Restaurant Review: Bourbon

Bourbon was a very promising choice. We saw an Instagram post of food from there and decided to give it a try. One of us (Damien) had previously been there for dinner, so we agreed to "add it to the list". We decided to venture out to the Adams Morgan neighborhood of DC in the cold (no one likes winter weather) for brunch on Sunday, January 17th. The atmosphere of Bourbon would be perfect in the spring; it’s not a huge place, but it is rustic and definitely comfortable inside. Bourbon does not take Sunday reservations, so we got there early to ensure that we could get a table in a reasonable amount of time. Thankfully, it wasn’t too busy and we were able to sit down right away.

Simone's Review:

I previously reviewed their brunch menu online and was hell bent on ordering the Beignets with Mixed Fruit and the Fried Chicken Sandwich; however, life does not always want us to have beignets. Since the menu did not list the beignets, I opted for the Buffalo Chicken Nuggets as an appetizer for us, and remained faithful to my decision to try the Fried Chicken Sandwich. If you love to drink bottomless mimosas, the prices at Bourbon for mimosas are $7 per drink and $16 for bottomless. I wanted to be different this round and venture away from mimosas, so I chose the French 75 as my drink which was amazing! I would highly recommend it if you are friends with gin. The Buffalo Chicken Nuggets were very good, juicy, and covered in a tasteful and slightly spicy buffalo wing sauce. The blue cheese dressing was thick and perfection--it had chives, perfect chunks of blue cheese, and very creamy. The Fried Chicken Sandwich came with fries and a salad. My sides were pretty good--the fries were seasoned appropriately and not too salty, and the salad was refreshing. My Fried Chicken Sandwich looked amazing but the taste left more to be desired. The sandwich was topped with pimento cheese and avocado, but they could not save the fried chicken, as it was fried in panko. Panko has a unique taste and always makes me crave the true crunch and taste from flour based batter. I am a southern girl at heart--hence I am a fried chicken connoisseur--and this was not my my favorite piece of fried chicken. We declined dessert because it was Sunday and people have life goals like work and laundry. Our server was polite, kind, and seemed to be very laid back.

Damien's Review:

Unlike Simone, I had not checked out Bourbon’s brunch menu since we added it to the list and decided to check it out sometime in January. So I had some decisions to make when we got there. I also got the French 75 and it was awesome. Gin, champagne, simple syrup and fresh lemon juice? Yes, please. I’m not the biggest fan of gin, but this drink definitely made me think about having gin more often. Simone and I shared the Buffalo Chicken Nuggets and they were really good. My favorite part was definitely their house made blue cheese dressing--that was some delicious stuff and I wish I could have a bottle of it. For my main course, I got the Breakfast Burrito and added the shredded beef. I have typically found that you can’t go wrong with a breakfast burrito--I mean, who doesn’t love breakfast or a burrito? Unfortunately, Bourbon fell a little short with the taste and flavor of their Breakfast Burrito. The beef was seasoned well and I love mushrooms so I was happy that they were included in it, but I felt that the burrito just needed more “punch” overall. The dish came with tater tots as a side, which was a great choice. They were nothing to write home about, but were good and cooked well. The service we received was great and the atmosphere of the restaurant was fun--Bourbon was playing some great music while we were there and I could see it being a great spot to watch sports and enjoy delicious drinks in the future.

Our Review:

Overall, we would give Bourbon’s brunch a 3 out of 5. The atmosphere was welcoming, our service was good, and our appetizer and drinks were amazing. The let downs were our entrees and the damn beignets not being on the menu. We would definitely return for drinks/happy hour and would be opening to going for dinner (Damien seems to remember that their dinner was good, but it was some time ago), but doubt that we will return for brunch. Check out some pictures from our visit below. Until our next post, treat yourself with a great meal today!

Dinner at Duke's

We ushered in the month of November with a trip down to the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. to check out Duke's Grocery for a #HappyTummyList dinner. Simone had purchased a new car a few weeks prior to our outing, so we used this trip as an outlet to drown her sorrows about having a car note once again. But at least we drove into D.C. in style, right?! We also had lots to catch up on---Simone and Joe had recently come back from an amazing trip to Mexico for a friend's wedding, and Damien had just performed a wedding ceremony for close friends up in Baltimore. And Duke's, which considers itself a "neighborhood pub and supper spot" with influences from East London, was a great place for this occasion. Per usual, we started our evening with some drinks and appetizers. We have to do these things for the blog! Simone ordered the Moscow Mule, and Damien had a Founder's All Day I.P.A. The Moscow Mule was chilled, refreshing, and delicious, but it w...

Restaurant Review: Mulebone

Earlier this month we ventured out into Washington, DC for some happy hour and dinner action at Mulebone , which is located on 14th Street NW (right across from Busboys and Poets). Given its location, Mulebone is within a relatively short walk of the U St. Metro Station, but we drove and lucked out in finding a parking spot directly across the street from the restaurant (Simone almost cried tears of joy!). We planned this #HappyTummyList adventure weeks in advance, but neither of us could have imagined that we would be reeling from the news of the vicious murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castille that day. In many ways, this happy hour gave us a space to talk through these incredibly tragic events and support one another. It is really difficult to comprehend how and why these atrocities are happening in 2016. Seriously, #blacklivesmatter, y'all. But thankfully, Mulebone provided us with a great venue to enjoy some delicious food and drinks. And in much needed and fantastic...

Restaurant Review: Takoda Restaurant & Beer Garden

Summer is slowly winding down and we can't believe it. Fortunately, these are the perfect days to enjoy some of the best things about summer and the DMV, and one of those things is brunch. On the very last day of July we ventured into Washington, DC to enjoy brunch at Takoda , which is located at the beginning of the U Street corridor on 7th Street and Florida Avenue NW. Upon entering Takoda, we ventured upstairs to the main dinning area to be seated. There is a beautiful beer garden and roof top area for drinks and food as well, but it was too hot and humid outside so we opted for the downstairs dining area instead. If you enjoy the outdoors, a beautiful city view, and fresh air, then grab a seat upstairs on the rooftop which is open year-round - it is definitely beautiful up there! Simone's Review: Our waitress was incredibly sweet and offered us the Mimosa specials when we sat down. The mimosas are half priced ($6) during brunch, so we opted for individual mimosas versu...
